Tea-ly

Today, James and I went on a little excursion to Ely, a little town on the river Cam about 20 miles North of Cambridge. We took the train since it would take about 5 hours by boat! It was a lovely day, and so we started with a walk along the riverside, before heading to Waterside Antiques Centre to look at all the wonderful things there and fantasise about fitting out our ideal boat with vintage finds.

After that we headed into the town centre and spent a couple of happy hours in Toppings Bookshop, a little independent shop which serves complimentary tea to its customers. I went to the counter to settle my bill for the two cups of tea we'd had and was told that they were free! Definitely worth a visit - it's well stocked and they staff are very knowledgeable and friendly.

Before we left, we finished off with more tea at Peacocks Tearooms, where I had their chocolate cream tea (chocolate scone, brownie and chocolate black tea - so decadent!) and James had Yorkshire tea and a teacake. Peacock's is a traditional English tearoom and delightfully quaint in a very self aware way. The teacups are carefully mismatched and if they accidentally give you a matching set, you can ask to have it swapped! But they get away with it by serving such wonderful tea and cakes and by being very friendly. We were served by the proprietor who told us about how he'd just stocked up on the chocolate tea in Paris the day before!

A ship's horn - a little excessive at £220!
